OMASTAR uses its tentacles to capture its prey. It is believed to have become extinct because its shell grew too large and heavy, causing its movements to become too slow and ponderous.

Omastar Weakness

Omastar's Rock/Water typing leaves it vulnerable to Grass, Electric, Fighting, and Ground. Grass hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. 5 resistances help offset the weaknesses. Omastar's physical bulk (base 125 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.

Omastar Guide

  • In Ruby & Sapphire, Swift Swim changes the entire equation for Omastar. The 495 BST doesn't tell the full story. Ranked C-Tier as a hazard setter. Ice Beam with Leftovers is the standard set.

  • In Ruby & Sapphire, watch for Exeggutor (Grass), Raikou (Electric), and Machamp (Fighting) when using Omastar. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Exeggutor is the most dangerous since Grass moves deal 4x damage. Ground-type attackers are also a problem.

  • Swift Swim is what you want on Omastar. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Shell Armor, Weak Armor) work on paper but Swift Swim is what makes Omastar worth using.

  • At base 55 Speed, it won't be moving first often. On offense, Omastar is a mixed attacker with base 60 Attack and 115 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a hazard setter.

  • In Ruby & Sapphire, run Ice Beam, Raindance, Spikes, and Hydro Pump on Omastar. Ice Beam is the most common pick at 22% usage. This set covers the hazard setter role with a mix of damage and utility.

One of the original 151, Omastar has appeared in 19 games — most mainline games. From Red & Blue through the latest titles, it's rarely been left out of a regional Pokedex.
