Stats & Training
Defense and Sp. Atk carry most of Omastar's stat budget. Speed's the obvious dump stat. Tough to catch and yields 2 Defense EVs. Follows a medium-fast 1M XP curve.
It is thought that this Pokémon became extinct because its spiral shell grew too large.
Omastar Weakness
Omastar's Rock/Water typing leaves it vulnerable to Grass, Electric, Fighting, and Ground. Grass hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. 5 resistances help offset the weaknesses. Omastar's physical bulk (base 125 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Grass |
| 2x (Weak) | Electric, Fighting, Ground |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Normal, Ice, Poison, Flying |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Fire |
- Fairy type does not exist — Dragon has fewer checks
- Physical / Special split now per-move (introduced Gen IV)
In Platinum, Infernape can KO Omastar with Close Combat (100-117%). Zapdos threatens a KO with Thunderbolt (112-132%).

Omastar Guide
In Platinum, Swift Swim changes the entire equation for Omastar. The 495 BST doesn't tell the full story. Ranked C-Tier as a wallbreaker. Surf with Life Orb is the standard set.
Swift Swim is what you want on Omastar. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Shell Armor, Weak Armor) work on paper but Swift Swim is what makes Omastar worth using. On wall sets, Swift Swim pairs with Omastar's base 125 Defense to absorb physical hits on the switch.
At base 55 Speed, it won't be moving first often. On offense, Omastar is a special attacker with base 115 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a wallbreaker.
In Platinum, run Surf, Ice Beam, Raindance, and Hiddenpowergrass on Omastar. Surf is the most common pick at 23% usage. Surf provides reliable STAB damage.
