Stats & Training
Everything pushes toward special damage here. Magmortar's Sp. Atk does the work, Defense pays the price. But you're still getting 3 Sp. Atk EVs per KO. Tough to catch, on a medium-fast 1M XP curve.
They dwell in volcanic craters. According to what is known, a single pair of male and female Magmortar lives in one volcano.
From its arm, it launches fireballs hotter than 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit. Its arm starts to melt when it fires a whole barrage.
Magmortar Weakness
Magmortar's Fire typing leaves it vulnerable to Water, Ground, and Rock. It resists 6 types, so it can switch into a lot of moves safely. Magmortar's special bulk (base 95 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.

Sun & Moon Evolution
Magmortar evolved from Magby's chain using a trade. It's a non-standard trigger, so check the details below. Breed this form to get Magby eggs (average hatch time). The evolution from Magby pushed Magmortar to 540 total stats. Sp.Atk saw the largest single gain at +55. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Breeding
Breed with Magmortar to get Magby eggs using 56 partners from the Humanshape egg group. Notable egg moves include Barrier, Belch, Belly Drum and 11 more.
Sun & Moon Magmortar Best Moveset
Bulk and offense in one package. Magmortar runs Assault Vest for a special bulk boost with no status moves allowed with a Timid nature, so it survives long enough to threaten with Flamethrower. Max Sp. Atk and Speed EVs and Electric and Psychic coverage make it hard to safely switch into.

STAB runs through Overheat and Flare Blitz for the basics, but Magmortar's real strength is the 10-type coverage spread. Poison and Electric hit common defensive types, and the movepool keeps going.

Magmortar Guide
In Sun & Moon, Magmortar works as a wallbreaker with 540 BST behind it. C-Tier on our list: a niche pick in Sun & Moon's meta. Thunderbolt with Assault Vest is the standard set.
In Sun & Moon, watch for Milotic (Water), Golem (Ground), and Aerodactyl (Rock) when using Magmortar. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB.
Flame Body has a 30% chance of burning attacking Pokémon on contact. That's the one you want on Magmortar. Vital Spirit is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses.
Magmortar is a special attacker with base 125 Sp. Atk. Enough bulk to take a hit or two, too. Speed tells the real story. Base 83 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. Fits the wallbreaker role.
In Sun & Moon, run Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, Psychic, and Focus Blast on Magmortar. Thunderbolt is the most common pick at 24% usage. Flamethrower provides reliable STAB damage.
Game Availability
Since Diamond & Pearl, Magmortar has been in 13 games. Requiring a trade evolution to obtain means it's consistently available but requires more effort than simply catching it in the wild.
