Stats & Training
Everything pushes toward special damage here. Magmortar's Sp. Atk does the work, Defense pays the price. But you're still getting 3 Sp. Atk EVs per KO. Tough to catch, on a medium-fast 1M XP curve.
When launching 3,600 degrees F fireballs, its body takes on a whitish hue from the intense heat.
Magmortar Weakness
Magmortar's Fire typing leaves it vulnerable to Water, Ground, and Rock. The Fire typing picks up 5 resistances to work with. Magmortar's special bulk (base 95 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Water, Ground, Rock |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Grass, Ice, Bug, Steel |
- Fairy type does not exist — Dragon has fewer checks
- Physical / Special split now per-move (introduced Gen IV)
In Platinum, Flygon can KO Magmortar with Earthquake (130-154%). Swampert threatens a KO with Earthquake (112-132%). Aerodactyl's Stone Edge also KOs at 135-159%.

Platinum Magmortar Best Moveset
Prediction matters here. Choice Scarf means Magmortar can't change moves after clicking, but the payoff is speed patching through item lock. Max Sp. Atk and Speed EVs with Flame Body back that up. Electric coverage prevents free switches.

STAB runs through Overheat and Flare Blitz for the basics, but Magmortar's real strength is the 10-type coverage spread. Poison and Electric hit common defensive types, and the movepool keeps going.

How to Get Magmortar in Platinum
A trade step sits in Magmortar's 3-stage chain from Magby. The step cards below map each stage with catch locations and evolution methods. Magby shows up in the wild, so the starting catch is the easy part.
Magmortar Guide
In Platinum, Magmortar works as a wallbreaker with 540 BST behind it. C-Tier on our list: a niche pick in Platinum's meta. Thunderbolt with Choice Scarf is the standard set.
In Platinum, watch for Milotic (Water), Golem (Ground), and Aerodactyl (Rock) when using Magmortar. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB.
Flame Body has a 30% chance of burning attacking Pokémon on contact. That's the one you want on Magmortar. Vital Spirit is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses.
Magmortar is a special attacker with base 125 Sp. Atk. Enough bulk to take a hit or two, too. Speed tells the real story. Base 83 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. Fits the wallbreaker role.
In Platinum, run Thunderbolt, Focus Blast, Hiddenpowergrass, and Fire Blast on Magmortar. Thunderbolt is the most common pick at 20% usage. This set covers the wallbreaker role with a mix of damage and utility.
Game Availability
Since Diamond & Pearl, Magmortar has been in 13 games. Requiring a trade evolution to obtain means it's consistently available but requires more effort than simply catching it in the wild.
