Stats & Training
Blastoise's spread isn't flashy. Sp. Def leads, Speed trails, 4 stats clear the bar. Tough to catch and worth 3 Sp. Def EVs, on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
BLASTOISE has water spouts that protrude from its shell. The water spouts are very accurate. They can shoot bullets of water with enough accuracy to strike empty cans from a distance of over 160 feet.

Blastoise Weakness
Electric and Grass moves hit Blastoise for super-effective damage. It resists 4 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Blastoise's overall bulk (79/100/105) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Electric, Grass |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Water, Ice, Steel |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move
In Ruby & Sapphire, Claydol's Explosion hits Blastoise for 42-49%. Forretress deals 36-42% with Explosion.

Ruby & Sapphire Evolution
Blastoise is the final form in a three-stage chain from Squirtle through Wartortle. Breeding this form produces Squirtle eggs (average hatch time). Evolving from Squirtle gave Blastoise the biggest boost in Sp.Def (+41), bringing the total to 530 stats. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Breeding
Breed with Blastoise to get Squirtle eggs easily using 49 partners from the Monster and Water1 egg groups. Notable egg moves include Flail, Foresight, Haze and 5 more.
Ruby & Sapphire Blastoise Best Moveset
The recommended build leans into Blastoise's strengths as a defensive wall. Leftovers provides passive recovery each turn, and HP-heavy investment EVs back that up. Torrent rounds out the package.

Moves
Don't skip the egg moves. Blastoise picks up Flail and Foresight only through breeding, and both fill gaps the natural movepool can't. STAB runs through Hydro Pump and Surf while coverage across 7 types adds range.

How to Get Blastoise in Ruby & Sapphire
Blastoise isn't available in the wild in Ruby & Sapphire. Start by transferring Squirtle from Red, Yellow, or Brilliant Diamond. The evolution path from Squirtle to Blastoise is covered in the steps below.
How to Obtain Blastoise in Ruby & Sapphire
Blastoise Guide
In Ruby & Sapphire, Blastoise has a 530 base stat total and ranks as C-Tier: a niche pick in Ruby & Sapphire's meta. It works best as a balanced. Surf with Leftovers is the standard set.
Mega Evolution isn't available in Ruby & Sapphire, but Blastoise does have a Mega form in Gen 6-7 games (X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon). Mega Blastoise hits 630 BST.
Torrent strengthens water moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less. That's the one you want on Blastoise. Rain Dish is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses.
In Ruby & Sapphire, Blastoise fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 85 Sp. Atk. Base 78 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. And it's tanky enough to absorb a few hits.
Game Availability
Blastoise first appeared in Red & Blue and spans 21 games across 10 generations. It later gained a Mega form in Generation 7 and a Gigantamax form in Generation 8, adding new dimensions to its competitive identity.
