Stats & Training
Tropius's spread favors balanced defenses over offense. HP leads the defensive side, Speed eats the cost. Yields 2 HP EVs per defeat. Slow 1.25M XP grind to level.
Delicious fruits grew out from around its neck because it always ate the same kind of fruit.
Tropius Weakness
Ice, Fire, Poison, Flying, and Rock moves hit Tropius for super-effective damage. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. The upside? Ground-type moves can't touch it at all.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Ice |
| 2x (Weak) | Fire, Poison, Flying, Rock |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Water, Fighting |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Grass |
| 0x (Immune) | Ground |
- Fairy type does not exist — Dragon has fewer checks
- Physical / Special split now per-move (introduced Gen IV)

Platinum Evolution
Tropius is what you get. No evolutions, but it breeds through two egg groups with a decent partner pool. Hatching is average hatch time. It's got 9 egg moves worth looking into. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Breeding
Breed Tropius easily with 45 breeding partners from the Plant and Monster egg groups. Pass egg moves like Curse, Headbutt, Leaf Blade and 6 more to offspring.
Platinum Tropius Best Moveset
Start with max Sp. Atk and Speed EVs. Modest nature gives Tropius the right special lean, Life Orb adds extra damage on every hit for a health trade, and Solarpower works in the background. Solarbeam is the main damage option.
Best Build
Tropius best EVs are Sp. Atk and Speed
Special Sweeper Moveset
- Solar Beam
- Air Slash
- Earthquake
- Sunny Day

Moves
Without breeding, Tropius misses out on Curse and Headbutt. That's 9 egg moves adding depth that the base kit lacks. STAB comes from Leaf Storm and Solar Beam, with coverage across 7 types rounding things out.

Tropius Guide
In Platinum, Don't let Tropius's 460 base stat total fool you. Chlorophyll is what makes it tick. It punches way above its weight class. We rate it C-Tier. Solarbeam with Life Orb is the standard set.
In Platinum, watch for Lapras (Ice), Charizard (Fire), and Nidoking (Poison) when using Tropius. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Lapras is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Flying and Rock-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter.
In Platinum, Run Chlorophyll on Tropius. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Tropius also gets Solar Power and Harvest, but they don't compare.
In Platinum, Tropius fills the balanced role. It's a physical attacker with base 68 Attack. At base 51 Speed, it won't be moving first often. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.
For Platinum, Tropius has answers, but so do you. Super-effective STAB from faster Pokemon is the simplest answer. Ice, Fire, and Poison-type attackers hit hardest.
