Stats & Training
Sp. Def leads and Attack gets almost nothing. That's Mantine's stat line in a nutshell. 2 stats sit in respectable range, but the spread is brutal. Very hard to catch and yields 2 Sp. Def EVs.
When the waves are calm, one may encounter a swarm of MANTINE swimming as if they are in flight.
It swims elegantly, mindless of REMORAID hitching on to its broad fins. It has a docile nature.
Mantine Weakness
Type-wise, Mantine takes extra damage from Electric and Rock. Watch out for Electric attacks, those deal 4x damage. Ground moves do nothing thanks to a full immunity. 5 resistances help offset the weaknesses. Water Absorb grants an additional Water immunity, reshaping the matchup chart. Mantine's special bulk (base 140 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Electric |
| 2x (Weak) | Rock |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Water, Fighting, Bug, Steel |
| 0x (Immune) | Ground |
- Fairy type does not exist — Dragon has fewer checks
- Physical / Special split now per-move (introduced Gen IV)
In Diamond & Pearl, Zapdos can KO Mantine with Thunderbolt (107-126%). Aerodactyl's Stone Edge hits Mantine for 77-91%. Rhyperior's Stone Edge also KOs at 103-121%.

Mantine Guide
In Diamond & Pearl, Swift Swim changes the entire equation for Mantine. The 465 BST doesn't tell the full story. Ranked C-Tier as a support. Surf with Leftovers is the standard set.
In Diamond & Pearl, Mantine's biggest threats include Jolteon (Electric) and Aerodactyl (Rock), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Jolteon is the most dangerous since Electric moves deal 4x damage. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.
Swift Swim is what you want on Mantine. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Water Absorb, Water Veil) work on paper but Swift Swim is what makes Mantine worth using.
Base 70 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Mantine is a special attacker with base 80 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a support.
For Diamond & Pearl, the core moveset is Surf, Rest, Icywind, and Sleep Talk. Surf leads at 24% usage. Surf provides reliable STAB damage.
