Stats & Training

Sp. Def leads and Attack gets almost nothing. That's Mantine's stat line in a nutshell. 2 stats sit in respectable range, but the spread is brutal. Very hard to catch and yields 2 Sp. Def EVs.

Swimming freely in open seas, it may fly out of the water and over the waves if it builds up enough speed.

Mantine Weakness

Type-wise, Mantine takes extra damage from Electric and Rock. Watch out for Electric attacks, those deal 4x damage. Ground moves do nothing thanks to a full immunity. 5 resistances help offset the weaknesses. Water Absorb grants an additional Water immunity, reshaping the matchup chart. Mantine's special bulk (base 140 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.

FireRed & LeafGreen Mantine Best Moveset

This is a pure walling set. Leftovers provides passive recovery each turn so Mantine sticks around, and the Calm nature reinforces special wall. The moveset handles sustain while Waterabsorb does work passively.

The egg pool carries weight here. Haze and Hydro Pump aren't available any other way for Mantine, and they meaningfully change what it threatens. Stack those on top of Hydro Pump and Surf for solid options.

Mantine Guide

  • In FireRed & LeafGreen, Swift Swim changes the entire equation for Mantine. The 465 BST doesn't tell the full story. Ranked C-Tier as a support. Surf with Leftovers is the standard set.

  • In FireRed & LeafGreen, Mantine's biggest threats include Jolteon (Electric) and Aerodactyl (Rock), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Jolteon is the most dangerous since Electric moves deal 4x damage. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.

  • Swift Swim is what you want on Mantine. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Water Absorb, Water Veil) work on paper but Swift Swim is what makes Mantine worth using.

  • Base 70 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Mantine is a mixed attacker with base 40 Attack and 80 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a support.

  • For FireRed & LeafGreen, the core moveset is Surf, Ice Beam, Haze, and Toxic. Surf leads at 19% usage. Surf provides reliable STAB damage.

Game Availability

Available in 17 titles since its debut in Gold & Silver, Mantine spans 9 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through wild encounters in most mainline games.
