Stats & Training

The stat line revolves around HP. Percentage recovery gets extra mileage here. Special backs it up, though Speed doesn't pull its weight. Worth 2 HP stat exp on a slow 1.25M XP grind to max out.

Lapras Weakness

Lapras's Water/Ice typing leaves it vulnerable to Electric, Grass, Fighting, and Rock. Lapras's overall bulk (130/80/95) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.

Moves

The level-up pool is slim, so TMs matter here. Lapras's Normal and Dragon coverage and more all comes from technical machines, built on top of Hydro Pump and Blizzard for same-type damage. Ice Beam and Hydro Pump are the payoff moves.

Lapras Guide

  • In Red & Blue, Lapras brings 545 BST to the table. B-Tier on our list: a solid option in Red & Blue for the right team. Thunderbolt anchors the moveset.

  • In Red & Blue, watch for Raikou (Electric), Venusaur (Grass), and Hitmonlee (Fighting) when using Lapras. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Rock-type attackers are also a problem. Lapras has enough bulk to absorb a hit, but don't push the matchup. Pivot to a teammate that resists.

  • Lapras is a special attacker with base 95 Special. Tanky enough to absorb a few hits, too. Speed tells the real story. At base 60 Speed, it won't be moving first often.

  • In Red & Blue, run Thunderbolt, Blizzard, Confuseray, and Sing on Lapras. Thunderbolt is the most common pick at 20% usage. Blizzard provides reliable STAB damage.

  • For Red & Blue, Lapras has answers, but so do you. Super-effective STAB from faster Pokemon is the simplest answer. Electric, Grass, and Fighting-type attackers hit hardest.

Game Availability

Available since Red & Blue, Lapras appears in 20 games spanning 10 generations. Beyond its original form, it gained a Gigantamax form in Generation 8.
