Tangela Weakness
Type-wise, Tangela takes extra damage from Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug. It resists 4 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Tangela's overall bulk (65/115/100) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Water, Electric, Grass, Ground |
- Only 15 types exist — Dark, Steel, and Fairy are absent
- Ghost has no effect on Psychic (a known bug, fixed in Gen II)
- Special stat governs both offense and defense — no Sp.Atk / Sp.Def split

Tangela Guide
In Red & Blue, Tangela isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Tangrowth to unlock its full potential. At 495 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
In Red & Blue, Tangela fills the setup sweeper role. It's a special attacker with base 100 Special. At base 60 Speed, it won't be moving first often. And it's tanky enough to absorb a few hits.
In Red & Blue, Tangela does the job early-game if you need a Grass type on your team. Evolve it into Tangrowth before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.
For Red & Blue, the core moveset is Megadrain, Sleep Powder, Bind, and Growth. Megadrain leads at 23% usage. Growth lets it set up before sweeping.
