Stats & Training
Hitmontop's spread favors balanced defenses over offense. Sp. Def leads the defensive side, Sp. Atk eats the cost. Yields 2 Sp. Def EVs per defeat. Medium-fast 1M XP curve to level.
If you are enchanted by its smooth, dance-like kicks, you may get a closer experience with one than you’d like.
It launches kicks while spinning. If it spins at high speed, it may bore its way into the ground.
Hitmontop Weakness
Flying and Psychic moves hit Hitmontop for super-effective damage. Its Fighting typing keeps the defensive matchups simple. With 50 HP and balanced defenses, Hitmontop can afford to eat a neutral hit or two.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Flying, Psychic |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Bug, Rock, Dark |
- Fairy type does not exist — Dragon has fewer checks
- Physical / Special split now per-move (introduced Gen IV)
In HeartGold & SoulSilver, Dragonite can KO Hitmontop with Outrage (99-116%). Azelf's Explosion hits Hitmontop for 74-88%.

How to Evolve
Breeding
Breed with Hitmontop to get Tyrogue eggs (with patience) using 39 partners from the Humanshape egg group. Notable egg moves include Bullet Punch, Counter, Helping Hand and 5 more.
HeartGold & SoulSilver Hitmontop Best Moveset
Bulk and offense in one package. Hitmontop runs Leftovers for passive recovery each turn with a Adamant nature, so it survives long enough to threaten with Close Combat. Max HP and Attack EVs and the remaining moves make it hard to safely switch into.

Hitmontop Guide
In HeartGold & SoulSilver, Don't let Hitmontop's 455 base stat total fool you. Intimidate is what makes it tick. It punches way above its weight class. We rate it C-Tier. Close Combat with Leftovers is the standard set.
In HeartGold & SoulSilver, watch for Aerodactyl (Flying) and Starmie (Psychic) when using Hitmontop. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.
In HeartGold & SoulSilver, Run Intimidate on Hitmontop. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Hitmontop also gets Technician and Steadfast, but they don't compare.
In HeartGold & SoulSilver, Hitmontop fills the balanced role. It's leaning toward the physical side (base 95 Attack). Base 70 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.
In HeartGold & SoulSilver, run Close Combat, Rapid Spin, Sucker Punch, and Mach Punch on Hitmontop. Close Combat is the most common pick at 19% usage. This set covers the balanced role with a mix of damage and utility.
