Stats & Training
Gligar's spread isn't flashy. Defense leads, Sp. Atk trails, 2 stats clear the bar. Moderately hard to find and worth 1 Defense EV, on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
GLIGAR glides through the air without a sound as if it were sliding. This POKéMON hangs on to the face of its foe using its clawed hind legs and the large pincers on its forelegs, then injects the prey with its poison barb.

Gligar Weakness
Gligar's Ground/Flying typing leaves it vulnerable to Ice and Water. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. It shrugs off Electric and Ground-type attacks completely. Gligar's physical bulk (base 105 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Ice |
| 2x (Weak) | Water |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fighting, Poison, Bug |
| 0x (Immune) | Electric, Ground |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move
In Ruby & Sapphire, Starmie threatens a KO with Ice Beam (172-202%). Swampert's Ice Beam also KOs at 119-140%.

Ruby & Sapphire Evolution
Evolving Gligar into Gliscor takes a held item. It's not a simple level-up, so check the chain details below. The evolved forms gain up to 80 total stats over Gligar. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Breeding
Breed Gligar easily with 37 breeding partners from the Bug egg group. Pass egg moves like Counter, Metal Claw, Razor Wind and 2 more to offspring.
Ruby & Sapphire Gligar Best Moveset
Find one free turn for Swords Dance and Gligar can run through teams. Jolly nature leans fast physical, Hypercutter supports the sweep, and the remaining moves stops anything from walling it cleanly.

Moves
The natural movepool does the job, but Counter and Metal Claw from the egg pool give Gligar something extra. Pair those with Earthquake and Dig for STAB and Poison and Normal coverage and more for reach, and the kit fills out nicely.

How to Get Gligar in Ruby & Sapphire
Gligar can't be caught in Ruby & Sapphire. Bring it over from Gold, Crystal, or Legends: Arceus instead. The encounter info below covers the source games.
Gligar Guide
In Ruby & Sapphire, Gligar isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Gliscor to unlock its full potential. At 430 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
Hyper Cutter prevents Attack from being lowered by other Pokémon. That's the one you want on Gligar. Immunity is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses. Sand Veil works too if your team needs something different.
In Ruby & Sapphire, Gligar fills the balanced role. It's a physical attacker with base 75 Attack. Base 85 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.
In Ruby & Sapphire, Gligar does the job early-game if you need a Ground/Flying type on your team. Evolve it into Gliscor before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.
Game Availability
Gligar has been available in 17 games since Gold & Silver, though obtaining it requires an item-based evolution. This extra step makes it less common than Pokemon found through standard wild encounters.
