It builds its nest on a steep cliff. When it is done gliding, it hops along the ground back to its nest.

Gligar Weakness

Gligar's Ground/Flying typing leaves it vulnerable to Ice and Water. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. It shrugs off Electric and Ground-type attacks completely. Gligar's physical bulk (base 105 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.

Moves

The natural movepool does the job, but Counter and Metal Claw from the egg pool give Gligar something extra. Pair those with Wing Attack for STAB and Poison and Normal coverage and more for reach, and the kit fills out nicely.

Gligar Guide

  • In Crystal, Gligar isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Gliscor to unlock its full potential. At 430 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • In Crystal, watch for Cloyster (Ice) and Starmie (Water) when using Gligar. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Cloyster is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.

  • In Crystal, Gligar fills the balanced role. It's a physical attacker with base 75 Attack. Base 85 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.

  • In Crystal, Gligar does the job early-game if you need a Ground/Flying type on your team. Evolve it into Gliscor before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.

  • In Crystal, run Earthquake, Counter, Sludge Bomb, and Wingattack on Gligar. Earthquake is the most common pick at 25% usage. Earthquake provides reliable STAB damage.

Game Availability

Gligar has been available in 17 games since Gold & Silver, though obtaining it requires an item-based evolution. This extra step makes it less common than Pokemon found through standard wild encounters.
