Is Weepinbell Good in Crystal Playthrough?

Hold off on the Leaf Stone until Weepinbell learns the moves you need. The level-up movepool is better than Victreebel's. Mid-Johto performance is fine for a Grass-type while you wait.

Pokemon Crystal

Weepinbell Crystal Guide

  • Weepinbell is meant to evolve into Victreebel. At 390 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.

  • In Crystal, Weepinbell's biggest threats include Charizard (Fire), Cloyster (Ice), and Dodrio (Flying), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Psychic-type attackers are also a problem.

  • At base 55 Speed, it won't be moving first often. On offense, Weepinbell is a mixed attacker with base 90 Attack and 85 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Fragile, can't afford to take many hits.

  • For Crystal, you can run Weepinbell through the first few routes without issues. 390 BST won't carry you far though. Get it to Victreebel as fast as you can.

  • For Crystal, the core moveset is Swords Dance, Sludge Bomb, Hiddenpowerground, and Sleep Powder. Swords Dance leads at 0% usage. This set covers the balanced role with a mix of damage and utility.

Game Availability

One of the original 151, Weepinbell has appeared in 20 games — most mainline games. From Red & Blue through the latest titles, it's rarely been left out of a regional Pokedex.
