TMs define Tangela's movepool. The natural moves cover basics with Solar Beam and Vine Whip, but the real versatility comes from technical machines giving it Normal coverage. That's where the options open up.

Tangela Guide

  • In Yellow, Tangela isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Tangrowth to unlock its full potential. At 495 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • In Yellow, Tangela's biggest threats include Charizard (Fire), Cloyster (Ice), and Gengar (Poison), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Flying and Bug-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter.

  • In Yellow, Tangela fills the setup sweeper role. It's a special attacker with base 100 Special. At base 60 Speed, it won't be moving first often. And it's tanky enough to absorb a few hits.

  • In Yellow, Tangela does the job early-game if you need a Grass type on your team. Evolve it into Tangrowth before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.

  • For Yellow, the core moveset is Megadrain, Sleep Powder, Bind, and Growth. Megadrain leads at 23% usage. Growth lets it set up before sweeping.

Game Availability

Tangela has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 21 titles across all 10 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
