Stats & Training
Tangela's spread favors balanced defenses over offense. Defense leads the defensive side, Attack eats the cost. Yields 1 Defense stat exp per defeat. Medium-fast 1M XP curve to level.
Its identity is obscured by masses of thick, blue vines. The vines are said to never stop growing.
Tangela Weakness
Type-wise, Tangela takes extra damage from Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug. It resists 4 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Tangela's overall bulk (65/115/100) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Water, Electric, Grass, Ground |
- Only 15 types exist — Dark, Steel, and Fairy are absent
- Ghost has no effect on Psychic (a known bug, fixed in Gen II)
- Special stat governs both offense and defense — no Sp.Atk / Sp.Def split

Tangela Guide
In Yellow, Tangela isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Tangrowth to unlock its full potential. At 495 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
In Yellow, Tangela fills the setup sweeper role. It's a special attacker with base 100 Special. At base 60 Speed, it won't be moving first often. And it's tanky enough to absorb a few hits.
In Yellow, Tangela does the job early-game if you need a Grass type on your team. Evolve it into Tangrowth before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.
For Yellow, the core moveset is Megadrain, Sleep Powder, Bind, and Growth. Megadrain leads at 23% usage. Growth lets it set up before sweeping.
