Stats & Training
You won't find a real weakness in Wartortle's stat line. It's well-rounded for the Turtle Pokemon, and what it does with that depends on moveset and items. Yields 2 Defense and Sp. Def stat exp, on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
It is recognized as a symbol of longevity. If its shell has algae on it, that WARTORTLE is very old.
It cleverly controls its furry ears and tail to maintain its balance while swimming.
Wartortle Weakness
Wartortle is weak to Electric and Grass. The Water typing picks up 4 resistances to work with. Wartortle's Water typing only leaves 2 gaps to cover.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Electric, Grass |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Water, Ice, Steel |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move
- Special stat split into Sp.Atk and Sp.Def
In Gold & Silver, Jolteon can KO Wartortle with Thunderbolt (98-116%). Venusaur's Giga Drain hits Wartortle for 76-89%. Electabuzz's Thunder also KOs at 106-125%.

How to Get Wartortle in Gold & Silver
Wartortle can't be caught in Gold & Silver. Transfer Squirtle from Red, Yellow, or Brilliant Diamond and evolve through the 2-stage line to get it. The step cards below map the full chain.
Wartortle Guide
At 405 BST, Wartortle is firmly in pre-evolution territory. Evolve it into Blastoise before bringing it to any serious fight.
Wartortle is a special attacker with base 65 Sp. Atk. Enough bulk to take a hit or two, too. Speed tells the real story. At base 58 Speed, it won't be moving first often.
In Gold & Silver, For a casual playthrough, Wartortle works as a placeholder. Water coverage is useful early. The real payoff is Blastoise. That's where the stats start mattering.
Game Availability
