Stats & Training

Umbreon's built to absorb hits, not race for knockouts. Special bulk with Sp. Def doing the heavy lifting. And the medium-fast 1M XP curve means it won't take forever to bring up, worth 2 Sp. Def EVs.

UMBREON evolved as a result of exposure to the moon’s waves. It hides silently in darkness and waits for its foes to make a move. The rings on its body glow when it leaps to attack.

Umbreon Weakness

Fighting and Bug moves hit Umbreon for super-effective damage. The upside? Psychic-type moves can't touch it at all. Umbreon's overall bulk (95/110/130) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.

Ruby & Sapphire Umbreon Best Moveset

HP-heavy investment EVs and Careful nature turn Umbreon into a wall that doesn't fold easily. Leftovers brings passive recovery each turn for the long game, and Wish handles sustain. Synchronize fills in the gaps.

Umbreon Guide

  • In Ruby & Sapphire, Umbreon works as a wall with 525 BST behind it. C-Tier on our list: a niche pick in Ruby & Sapphire's meta. Wish with Leftovers is the standard set.

  • In Ruby & Sapphire, watch for Hitmonlee (Fighting) and Heracross (Bug) when using Umbreon. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about. Umbreon has enough bulk to absorb a hit, but don't push the matchup. Pivot to a teammate that resists.

  • Synchronize copies burns, paralysis, and poison received onto the Pokémon that inflicted them. That's the one you want on Umbreon. Inner Focus is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses.

  • Umbreon is a special attacker with base 60 Sp. Atk. Tanky enough to absorb a few hits, too. Speed tells the real story. At base 65 Speed, it won't be moving first often. Fits the wall role.

  • In Ruby & Sapphire, run Wish, Protect, Toxic, and Pursuit on Umbreon. Wish is the most common pick at 21% usage. Pursuit provides reliable STAB damage.

Game Availability

Debuting in Gold & Silver, Umbreon appears in 19 games across 9 generations. A reliable presence in most mainline games, typically found through wild encounters.
