It ensnares prey by extending arms made of vines. Losing arms to predators does not trouble it.

Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Tangrowth Best Moveset

The recommended build leans into Tangrowth's strengths as a defensive wall. Assault Vest provides a special bulk boost with no status moves allowed, and HP-heavy investment EVs back that up. Regenerator rounds out the package.

Don't skip the egg moves. Tangrowth picks up Amnesia and Confusion only through breeding, and both fill gaps the natural movepool can't. STAB runs through Leaf Storm and Power Whip while coverage across 9 types adds range.

Tangrowth Guide

  • In Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, Don't let Tangrowth's 535 base stat total fool you. Regenerator is what makes it tick. It punches way above its weight class. We rate it A-Tier as a tank. Knock Off with Assault Vest is the standard set.

  • In Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, watch for Arcanine (Fire), Walrein (Ice), and Roserade (Poison) when using Tangrowth. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Flying and Bug-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter.

  • In Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, Run Regenerator on Tangrowth. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Tangrowth also gets Chlorophyll and Leaf Guard, but they don't compare.

  • In Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, Tangrowth fills the tank role. It's a mixed attacker with base 100 Attack and 110 Sp. Atk. Base 50 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.

  • For Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, Tangrowth has answers, but so do you. Status moves (Toxic, Will-O-Wisp) wear it down. Setup sweepers can use it as a boost opportunity. Physical attackers can break through.

Game Availability

Tangrowth first appeared in Diamond & Pearl and has been available in 13 games across 7 generations. Obtainable through wild encounters in most titles where it appears.
