Stats & Training
Omanyte's spread isn't flashy. Defense leads, HP trails, 2 stats clear the bar. Tough to catch and worth 1 Defense stat exp, on a medium-fast 1M XP curve.
In prehistoric times, it swam on the sea floor, eating plankton. Its fossils are sometimes found.
Omanyte Weakness
Type-wise, Omanyte takes extra damage from Grass, Electric, Fighting, and Ground. Watch out for Grass attacks, those deal 4x damage. It resists 5 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Omanyte's physical bulk (base 100 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Grass |
| 2x (Weak) | Electric, Fighting, Ground |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Normal, Ice, Poison, Flying |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Fire |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move
- Special stat split into Sp.Atk and Sp.Def
In Crystal, Rhydon can KO Omanyte with Earthquake (129-152%). Venusaur threatens a KO with Giga Drain (249-293%). Electabuzz's Thunder also KOs at 175-206%.

Crystal Evolution
Omanyte evolves into Omastar. It's a two-stage chain with the method shown below. A decent partner pool for breeding via two egg groups. Eggs are slow to hatch. Evolving adds up to 140 stat points total. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Breeding
Breed Omanyte with 37 breeding partners from the Water1 and Water3 egg groups. Pass egg moves like Aurora Beam, Bubble Beam, Haze and 2 more to offspring.

Moves
The egg pool carries weight here. Aurora Beam and Bubble Beam aren't available any other way for Omanyte, and they meaningfully change what it threatens. Stack those on top of Hydro Pump and Surf for solid options.

How to Get Omanyte in Crystal
Omanyte Guide
In Crystal, Omanyte isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Omastar to unlock its full potential. At 355 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
In Crystal, Omanyte's biggest threats include Venusaur (Grass), Jolteon (Electric), and Hitmonlee (Fighting), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Venusaur is the most dangerous since Grass moves deal 4x damage. Ground-type attackers are also a problem. At base 35 Speed, Omanyte won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.
In Crystal, Omanyte fills the trick room role. It's a mixed attacker with base 40 Attack and 90 Sp. Atk. Base 35 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go.
In Crystal, Omanyte does the job early-game if you need a Rock/Water type on your team. Evolve it into Omastar before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.
Omanyte evolves into Omastar at level 40. Takes some grinding. Plan your team around the mid-game wait.
Game Availability
Omanyte has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 19 titles across all 10 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
