Stats & Training
Bulk defines Altaria's stat line. Sp. Def and Defense anchor the defensive side, but Attack can't keep up offensively. Tough to catch and worth 2 Sp. Def EVs.
As it flies in a calm and relaxed manner, Altaria performs a humming song that would enrapture any audience.
This Pokémon has a kind disposition, but if it’s provoked, it will threaten opponents with shrill cries before attacking them without mercy.
Altaria Weakness
Type-wise, Altaria takes extra damage from Ice, Rock, Dragon, and Fairy. Watch out for Ice attacks, those deal 4x damage. Ground moves do nothing thanks to a full immunity. 5 resistances help offset the weaknesses.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Ice |
| 2x (Weak) | Rock, Dragon, Fairy |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Water, Fighting, Bug |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Grass |
| 0x (Immune) | Ground |
In Sword & Shield, Lunatone threatens a KO with Ice Beam (89-105%). Alcremie deals 49-58% with Dazzling Gleam.

Sword & Shield Evolution
Evolved from Swablu. Altaria is the final form in this two-stage line. Plenty of partners for breeding via two egg groups. Eggs are average hatch time. HP grew the most through evolution (+30 over Swablu), and Altaria peaks at 490 total stats. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Sword & Shield Altaria Best Moveset
The physical wall spread is where Altaria earns its spot. Heavy-Duty Boots for hazard immunity on every switch-in, Bold nature for the right lean, and Roost handles sustain. Natural Cure does the rest without needing a move slot.

Moves
TMs carry this one. Altaria learns Sky Attack and Outrage naturally for STAB, but the offensive range comes almost entirely from technical machines. Fairy and Normal and beyond give it real matchup play.

Altaria Guide
In Sword & Shield, Natural Cure changes the entire equation for Altaria. The 490 BST doesn't tell the full story. Ranked A-Tier. Roost with Heavy-Duty Boots is the standard set.
Mega Evolution isn't available in Sword & Shield, but Altaria does have a Mega form in Gen 6-7 games (X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon). Mega Altaria hits 590 BST.
In Sword & Shield, Altaria's biggest threats include Cloyster (Ice), Aerodactyl (Rock), and Salamence (Dragon), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Cloyster is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Fairy-type attackers are also a problem.
Natural Cure is what you want on Altaria. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Cloud Nine) work on paper but Natural Cure is what makes Altaria worth using.
Base 80 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Altaria is a mixed attacker with base 70 Attack and 70 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two.
Game Availability
Since debuting in Ruby & Sapphire, Altaria has appeared in 16 titles over 8 generations. Along the way, it received a Mega form in Generation 6, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
