Is Umbreon Good in Gold & Silver Playthrough?
Evolve Eevee via friendship at nighttime. Umbreon is the tankiest Eeveelution with incredible special bulk. Dark typing is new in Gen 2 and gives it immunity to Psychic, which is useful against Will at the E4. Doesn't deal much damage but almost nothing takes it down.

Umbreon Weakness
Fighting and Bug moves hit Umbreon for super-effective damage. The upside? Psychic-type moves can't touch it at all. Umbreon's overall bulk (95/110/130) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Fighting, Bug |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Ghost, Dark |
| 0x (Immune) | Psychic |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move
- Special stat split into Sp.Atk and Sp.Def

The level-up pool is slim, so TMs matter here. Umbreon's Normal and Psychic coverage and more all comes from technical machines, built on top of Feint Attack and Pursuit for same-type damage. Dream Eater and Hyper Beam are the payoff moves.

Umbreon Gold & Silver Guide
In Gold & Silver, Umbreon works as a wall with 525 BST behind it. B-Tier on our list: a solid option in Gold & Silver for the right team. Toxic with Leftovers is the standard set.
In Gold & Silver, watch for Hitmonlee (Fighting) and Heracross (Bug) when using Umbreon. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about. Umbreon has enough bulk to absorb a hit, but don't push the matchup. Pivot to a teammate that resists.
Umbreon is a special attacker with base 60 Sp. Atk. Tanky enough to absorb a few hits, too. Speed tells the real story. At base 65 Speed, it won't be moving first often. Fits the wall role.
In Gold & Silver, run Toxic, Pursuit, Confuseray, and Moonlight on Umbreon. Toxic is the most common pick at 0% usage. Pursuit provides reliable STAB damage.
For Gold & Silver, Umbreon has answers, but so do you. Status moves (Toxic, Will-O-Wisp) wear it down. Setup sweepers can use it as a boost opportunity. Special attackers bypass its physical bulk.
Game Availability
Debuting in Gold & Silver, Umbreon appears in 19 games across 9 generations. A reliable presence in most mainline games, typically found through wild encounters.
