It is inept at turning because of its four short legs. It can only charge and run in one direction.

Rhyhorn Weakness

Rhyhorn's Ground/Rock typing leaves it vulnerable to Water, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Ground, and Steel. Water and Grass hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. It shrugs off Electric-type attacks completely. It resists 5 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Rhyhorn's physical bulk (base 95 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.

Moves

The natural movepool does the job, but Counter and Crunch from the egg pool give Rhyhorn something extra. Pair those with Earthquake and Dig for STAB and coverage across 7 types for reach, and the kit fills out nicely.

Rhyhorn Guide

  • Rhydon at level 42 is the mid-stage. Push through to Rhyperior while holding a Protector for the final form. 345 BST right now won't cut it long-term.

  • Level 42 gets you Rhydon. Not the fastest evolution, so consider Exp. Share or route grinding to speed it up.

  • In Gold & Silver, Rhyhorn does the job early-game if you need a Ground/Rock type on your team. Evolve it into Rhydon before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.

  • You can find Rhyhorn in Gold & Silver. The Locations section has the full breakdown of routes and encounter details. It also appears in 20 other games across the series.

Game Availability

Rhyhorn has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 21 titles across all 10 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
