Is Torterra Good in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Playthrough?

Grass/Ground gives Torterra answers to four gym leaders (Roark, Wake, Volkner, Byron). Earthquake from level-up hits hard. The problem is Candice's Ice-types and Cynthia's Garchomp both exploit that 4x Ice weakness. You'll want Ice-resistant teammates for the endgame. Reusable TMs let Torterra carry Crunch and Stone Edge for coverage. Strong from gym 2 through gym 8, then needs support.

Torterra Weakness

Ice, Fire, Flying, and Bug moves hit Torterra for super-effective damage. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. The upside? Electric-type moves can't touch it at all. Torterra's overall bulk (95/105/85) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.

Torterra Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Guide

  • In Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, Torterra works as a tank with 525 BST behind it. C-Tier on our list: a niche pick in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl's meta. Earthquake with Assault Vest is the standard set.

  • In Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, watch for Cloyster (Ice), Arcanine (Fire), and Salamence (Flying) when using Torterra. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Cloyster is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Bug-type attackers are also a problem.

  • Overgrow strengthens grass moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less. That's the one you want on Torterra. Shell Armor is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses.

  • Torterra is a mixed attacker with base 109 Attack and 75 Sp. Atk. Tanky enough to absorb a few hits, too. Speed tells the real story. At base 56 Speed, it won't be moving first often. Fits the tank role.

  • In Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, run Earthquake, Wood Hammer, Stone Edge, and Leaf Storm on Torterra. Earthquake is the most common pick at 0% usage. Earthquake provides reliable STAB damage.

Game Availability

Debuting in Diamond & Pearl, Torterra appears in 12 games across 7 generations. A reliable presence in a solid number of games, typically found through wild encounters.
