Is Quilava Good in Crystal Playthrough?

Handles everything Cyndaquil did with more speed and power. Quilava clears the Bug trainers and Jasmine's Steel-types on the way to Typhlosion at level 36. Crystal's reduced Fire roster makes keeping Quilava in the lead even more important.

Egg moves make a real difference. Quilava gets Foresight and Fury Swipes exclusively through breeding, filling gaps that TMs and level-up can't touch. Normal and Ground coverage and more rounds out the picture alongside Fire Blast and Flamethrower.

Quilava Crystal Guide

  • In Crystal, Quilava isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Typhlosion to unlock its full potential. At 405 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • In Crystal, Quilava's biggest threats include Gyarados (Water), Rhydon (Ground), and Tyranitar (Rock), all carrying super-effective STAB moves.

  • In Crystal, Quilava fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 80 Sp. Atk. Base 80 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many.

  • In Crystal, Quilava does the job early-game if you need a Fire type on your team. Evolve it into Typhlosion before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.

  • For Crystal, the core moveset is Flamethrower, Quickattack, Double Edge, and Sunnyday. Flamethrower leads at 0% usage. Flamethrower provides reliable STAB damage.

Game Availability

Quilava first appeared in Gold & Silver and has been available in 17 games across 9 generations. Obtainable through catching or hatching as a base form in most titles where it appears.
