Is Lanturn Good in Ruby & Sapphire Playthrough?

AbilityVolt Absorb turns Electric attacks into healing. Water/Electric handles Winona, Wallace, and most Water trainers. Native to Hoenn via underwater encounters. The massive HP and dual coverage make Lanturn one of RS's underrated team options.

Pokedex Entry

LANTURN is nicknamed “the deep-sea star” for its illuminated antenna. This POKéMON produces light by causing a chemical reaction between bacteria and its bodily fluids inside the antenna.

LANTURN is known to emit light. If you peer down into the dark sea from a ship at night, you can sometimes see this POKéMON’s light rising from the depths where it swims. It gives the sea an appearance of a starlit night.

Lanturn Ruby & Sapphire Guide

  • In Ruby & Sapphire, Don't let Lanturn's 460 base stat total fool you. Volt Absorb is what makes it tick. It punches way above its weight class. We rate it C-Tier as a support. Thunderbolt with Leftovers is the standard set.

  • In Ruby & Sapphire, watch for Exeggutor (Grass) and Golem (Ground) when using Lanturn. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.

  • In Ruby & Sapphire, Run Volt Absorb on Lanturn. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Lanturn also gets Illuminate, but they don't compare.

  • In Ruby & Sapphire, Lanturn fills the support role. It's a special attacker with base 76 Sp. Atk. At base 67 Speed, it won't be moving first often. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.

  • In Ruby & Sapphire, run Thunderbolt, Hydro Pump, Thunder Wave, and Ice Beam on Lanturn. Thunderbolt is the most common pick at 0% usage. Thunderbolt provides reliable STAB damage.

Game Availability

Lanturn first appeared in Gold & Silver and has been available in 17 games across 9 generations. Obtainable through wild encounters in most titles where it appears.
