How to Get Grotle in Platinum
No wild encounters for Grotle. The 3-stage chain runs through Turtwig, which you can catch but it's a rare spawn from the locations below. Evolve at level 32 once you've got the levels.
Grotle Weakness
Grotle is weak to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug. 4 resistances help offset the weaknesses. That's a lot of weak spots to cover so team support is important.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Water, Electric, Grass, Ground |
- Fairy type does not exist — Dragon has fewer checks
- Physical / Special split now per-move (introduced Gen IV)

Grotle Evolutions
Partway through Turtwig's chain. Grotle still has another evolution ahead before reaching Torterra. For breeding, average hatch time with a decent partner pool via two egg groups. Attack has grown the most so far (+21), but there's still another 120 stats to gain in the final evolution. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Breeding
Breed with Grotle to get Turtwig eggs easily using 45 partners from the Plant and Monster egg groups. Notable egg moves include Amnesia, Body Slam, Double-Edge and 7 more.
Pt Grotle Best Moveset
85 Defense improves the physical tank potential, but 36 Speed and 55 Sp. Atk leave the moveset too slow and too narrow offensively. Torterra adds Ground typing. Torterra is where the typing delivers.

Moves List
Egg moves make a real difference. Grotle gets Amnesia and Body Slam exclusively through breeding, filling gaps that TMs and level-up can't touch. Normal and Dark coverage and more rounds out the picture alongside Leaf Storm and Solar Beam.

Grotle Platinum Guide
Grotle is meant to evolve into Torterra. At 405 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.
In Platinum, Grotle's biggest threats include Charizard (Fire), Cloyster (Ice), and Crobat (Poison), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Flying and Bug-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. At base 36 Speed, Grotle won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.
Overgrow is the go-to ability for Grotle. It strengthens grass moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less. It's Grotle's only ability.
Base 36 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. On offense, Grotle is a physical attacker with base 89 Attack. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a trick room.
For Platinum, you can run Grotle through the first few routes without issues. 405 BST won't carry you far though. Get it to Torterra as fast as you can.
Game Availability
