Venomoth Weakness

Fire, Flying, Psychic, Bug, and Rock moves hit Venomoth for super-effective damage. Venomoth's special bulk (base 90 Special) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.

Venomoth Guide

  • For Red & Blue, we rate Venomoth C-Tier: a niche pick in Red & Blue's meta. At 465 BST, it fits the pivot role. Sleep Powder anchors the moveset.

  • In Red & Blue, watch for Arcanine (Fire), Dodrio (Flying), and Starmie (Psychic) when using Venomoth. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Bug and Rock-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter.

  • Base 90 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Venomoth is a physical attacker with base 65 Attack. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a pivot.

  • In Red & Blue, run Sleep Powder, Stun Spore, Psychic, and Megadrain on Venomoth. Sleep Powder is the most common pick at 20% usage. This set covers the pivot role with a mix of damage and utility.

  • For Red & Blue, Venomoth has answers, but so do you. Super-effective STAB from faster Pokemon is the simplest answer. Fire, Flying, and Psychic-type attackers hit hardest.

Game Availability

One of the original 151, Venomoth has appeared in 19 games — most mainline games. From Red & Blue through the latest titles, it's rarely been left out of a regional Pokedex.
