Stats & Training
Attack and Defense carry most of Metagross's stat budget. Speed's the obvious dump stat. Near-impossible to catch and yields 3 Defense EVs. Follows a slow 1.25M XP grind.
METAGROSS has four brains in total. Combined, the four brains can breeze through difficult calculations faster than a supercomputer. This POKéMON can float in the air by tucking in its four legs.
METAGROSS is the result of two METANG achieving fusion. When hunting, this POKéMON pins the prey to the ground under its massive body. It then eats the helpless victim using the large mouth on its stomach.
Metagross Weakness
Metagross is weak to Fire and Ground. On the flip side, it's immune to Poison-type moves entirely. With 8 resistances, the defensive profile is strong. Metagross's physical bulk (base 130 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Fire, Ground |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Normal, Grass, Ice, Flying, Rock, Dragon, Steel |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Psychic |
| 0x (Immune) | Poison |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move

Ruby & Sapphire Evolution
End of the line. Metagross caps a three-stage chain that started at Beldum. Breeding produces the base form, and eggs are takes forever to hatch. Attack grew the most through evolution (+80 over Beldum), and Metagross peaks at 600 total stats. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Breeding
Metagross is genderless — breed with Ditto to produce Beldum eggs. Part of the Mineral egg group.
Ruby & Sapphire Metagross Best Moveset
Normal and Ground coverage is what separates a good sweep from a wasted boost. After Agility, Metagross threatens a wide range with max Attack without Speed EVs and Leftovers backing every hit.

Leveling does the heavy lifting. Metagross picks up Take Down and Psychic along the way, building toward a complete offensive set. TMs add coverage across 8 types, but the foundation's already strong by then.

How to Get Metagross in Ruby & Sapphire
You're catching Beldum first, not Metagross. Beldum appears but it's a rare spawn in the encounters below. The step cards map the full 3-stage chain with evolution methods between each stage.
Metagross Guide
For Ruby & Sapphire, we rate Metagross S-Tier: one of the best picks in the Ruby & Sapphire meta. At 600 BST, it fits the wallbreaker role. Meteormash with Leftovers is the standard set.
Mega Evolution isn't available in Ruby & Sapphire, but Metagross does have a Mega form in Gen 6-7 games (X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon). Mega Metagross hits 700 BST.
In Ruby & Sapphire, Metagross's biggest threats include Arcanine (Fire) and Swampert (Ground), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about. Metagross has enough bulk to absorb a hit, but don't push the matchup. Pivot to a teammate that resists.
Clear Body is the go-to ability for Metagross. It prevents stats from being lowered by other Pokémon. Its hidden ability Light Metal can work in specific setups.
Base 70 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Metagross is a mixed attacker with base 135 Attack and 95 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Tanky enough to absorb a few hits. Best used as a wallbreaker.
Game Availability
Since debuting in Ruby & Sapphire, Metagross has appeared in 16 titles over 8 generations. Along the way, it received a Mega form in Generation 7, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
