Grotle Weakness

Grotle is weak to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug. 4 resistances help offset the weaknesses. That's a lot of weak spots to cover so team support is important.

Moves

Egg moves make a real difference. Grotle gets Amnesia and Body Slam exclusively through breeding, filling gaps that TMs and level-up can't touch. Normal and Dark coverage and more rounds out the picture alongside Leaf Storm and Solar Beam.

Grotle Guide

  • Grotle is meant to evolve into Torterra. At 405 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.

  • In HeartGold & SoulSilver, Grotle's biggest threats include Charizard (Fire), Cloyster (Ice), and Crobat (Poison), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Flying and Bug-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. At base 36 Speed, Grotle won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.

  • In HeartGold & SoulSilver, Turtwig evolves into Grotle at level 18. Grotle evolves into Torterra at level 32. Grotle is a middle-stage evolution in the Turtwig line.

  • Overgrow is the go-to ability for Grotle. It strengthens grass moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less. Its hidden ability Shell Armor can work in specific setups.

  • Base 36 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. On offense, Grotle is a physical attacker with base 89 Attack. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a trick room.

Game Availability

Available in 12 titles since its debut in Diamond & Pearl, Grotle spans 7 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through catching or hatching as a base form in a solid number of games.
