Stats & Training

Everything pushes toward special damage here. Gastly's Special does the work, HP pays the price. But you're still getting 1 Special stat exp per KO. Common in the wild, on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.

Almost invisible, this gaseous POKéMON cloaks the target and puts it to sleep without notice.

Gastly Weakness

Gastly is weak to Ground, Psychic, and Ghost. On the flip side, it's immune to Normal and Fighting-type moves entirely. Gastly's special bulk (base 100 Special) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.

Moves

Most of Gastly's flexibility comes from TMs. Same-type output runs through Lick and Night Shade, but Psychic and Normal and the rest of the TM pool push it from predictable to genuinely threatening.

Gastly Guide

  • At 375 BST, Gastly is firmly in pre-evolution territory. Evolve it into Haunter before bringing it to any serious fight.

  • In Red & Blue, Gastly's biggest threats include Golem (Ground), Starmie (Psychic), and Gengar (Ghost), all carrying super-effective STAB moves.

  • Gastly is a physical attacker with base 35 Attack. Fragile, can't afford to take many hits, too. Speed tells the real story. Base 80 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. Fits the attacker role.

  • In Red & Blue, For a casual playthrough, Gastly works as a placeholder. Ghost/Poison coverage is useful early. The real payoff is Haunter. That's where the stats start mattering.

  • Gastly evolves into Haunter at level 25. Takes some grinding. Plan your team around the mid-game wait.

Game Availability

Present since Red & Blue, Gastly appears in 22 games spanning 10 generations. Gen 1 originals like Gastly have the longest track record of availability in the series.
