Is Seadra Good in Yellow Playthrough?

Decent speed and special output, but pure Water typing offers nothing Starmie or Lapras can't do better. Only worth considering if you've already passed on every other Water option.

Y Seadra Best Moveset

MoveSurf and MoveBlizzard from 95 Special hit solidly in the mid-tier, and 85 Speed goes first against a fair chunk of the competition. Not the power of Starmie or the bulk of Lapras, but the Water/Ice coverage works against most neutral targets. Fills the middle ground competently.

Moves List

Without TMs, Seadra's movepool is bare bones. With them, you get Normal and Ice coverage on top of Hydro Pump and Surf for STAB. The natural kit handles basics, but TMs are doing the real work.

Pokemon Yellow

Seadra Yellow Guide

  • In Yellow, Seadra isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Kingdra to unlock its full potential. At 490 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • In Yellow, watch for Raikou (Electric) and Venusaur (Grass) when using Seadra. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.

  • No. Seadra only evolves into Kingdra through a real trade. There is no in-game alternative in Yellow. Trade needs a Game Boy Advance link cable and a second GBA running another Gen 3 game (FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald). Trade Seadra to a friend, then have them trade it back. The 2026 Switch re-release supports the same trade through local wireless on the Pokemon Center 2F Wireless Club, with no cables required. The Dragon Scale must be held during the trade. Bring one over from a sibling Gen 3 game if needed.

  • In Yellow, Seadra fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 95 Special. Base 85 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.

  • In Yellow, Seadra does the job early-game if you need a Water type on your team. Evolve it into Kingdra before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.

Game Availability

Seadra has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 20 titles across all 10 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
