Is Raticate Good in Yellow Playthrough?

If you kept Rattata past the early routes, Raticate does solid work through the mid-game gyms. MoveHyper Fang hits hard against anything that doesn't resist Normal. Falls behind once Celadon City opens up better options.

Ignores stat matchups entirely with MoveSuper Fang halving the target's HP in one hit. 97 Speed goes first against most of the mid-tier, and MoveBody Slam follows up with a one-in-three paralysis chance. A two-move sequence that works against anything regardless of type or bulk.

Moves List

Most of Raticate's flexibility comes from TMs. Same-type output runs through Hyper Beam and Skull Bash, but Ice and Water and the rest of the TM pool push it from predictable to genuinely threatening.

Pokemon Yellow

Raticate Yellow Guide

  • In Yellow, Raticate's biggest threats include Machamp (Fighting), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Only 1 weakness means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.

  • Honestly, in Yellow Raticate is a tough sell at 393 BST. Plenty of stronger Normal options exist. Fun pick, not a practical one.

  • In Yellow, Raticate brings 393 BST to the table. C-Tier on our list: a niche pick in Yellow's meta. Superfang anchors the moveset.

  • Raticate is a physical attacker with base 81 Attack. Fragile, can't afford to take many hits, too. Speed tells the real story. Base 97 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many.

  • Yes. Alolan Raticate is a regional variant with different typing and a reworked stat spread. Introduced in Gen 7. Plays completely differently from the original.

Game Availability

Available since Red & Blue, Raticate appears in 18 games spanning 10 generations. Beyond its original form, it gained an Alolan form in Generation 7.
