Is Frosmoth Good in Sword & Shield Playthrough?

Frosmoth's 125 Special Attack and AbilityIce Scales hidden ability (halving special damage) make it a powerful Ice/Bug. Melony uses one in Shield. Handles Raihan with Ice and Milo with Bug. 4x Rock weakness is dangerous. Strong when it avoids Rock attacks, demolished when it doesn't.

Frosmoth Weakness

Fire, Rock, Flying, and Steel moves hit Frosmoth for super-effective damage. Fire and Rock hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. Frosmoth's special bulk (base 90 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.

Icy scales fall from its wings like snow as it flies over fields and mountains. The temperature of its wings is less than −290 degrees Fahrenheit.

It shows no mercy to any who desecrate fields and mountains. It will fly around on its icy wings, causing a blizzard to chase offenders away.

Frosmoth Sword & Shield Guide

  • In Sword & Shield, Don't let Frosmoth's 475 base stat total fool you. Ice Scales is what makes it tick. It punches way above its weight class. We rate it C-Tier as a wallbreaker. Ice Beam with Heavy-Duty Boots is the standard set.

  • In Sword & Shield, watch for Infernape (Fire), Rhyperior (Rock), and Staraptor (Flying) when using Frosmoth. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Infernape is the most dangerous since Fire moves deal 4x damage. Steel-type attackers are also a problem.

  • In Sword & Shield, Run Ice Scales on Frosmoth. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Frosmoth also gets Shield Dust, but they don't compare.

  • In Sword & Shield, Frosmoth fills the wallbreaker role. It's a special attacker with base 125 Sp. Atk. At base 65 Speed, it won't be moving first often. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.

  • In Sword & Shield, run Ice Beam, Quiver Dance, Giga Drain, and Bugbuzz on Frosmoth. Ice Beam is the most common pick at 0% usage. This set covers the wallbreaker role with a mix of damage and utility.

Game Availability

Introduced in Sword & Shield, Frosmoth has appeared in 2 games across 3 generations. Later debuts mean fewer total appearances, but it's been a consistent presence since its introduction.
