How to Get Grovyle in HeartGold & SoulSilver

Can't catch Grovyle directly. Start with Treecko but it's a rare spawn from the locations below, then evolve at level 16. The 2-stage line from Treecko to Grovyle is where the leveling time goes.

Grovyle Guide

  • Grovyle is meant to evolve into Sceptile. At 405 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.

  • In HeartGold & SoulSilver, watch for Arcanine (Fire), Walrein (Ice), and Gengar (Poison) when using Grovyle. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Flying and Bug-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter.

  • In HeartGold & SoulSilver, Treecko evolves into Grovyle at level 16. Grovyle evolves into Sceptile at level 36. Grovyle is a middle-stage evolution in the Treecko line.

  • Overgrow strengthens grass moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less. That's the one you want on Grovyle. Unburden is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses.

  • Base 95 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Grovyle is a special attacker with base 85 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Fragile, can't afford to take many hits.

Game Availability

Available in 16 titles since its debut in Ruby & Sapphire, Grovyle spans 8 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through catching or hatching as a base form in most mainline games.
